Being the largest country in Africa and 10 th largest in the world, Algeria is hard to miss. Algeria located in Northern Africa, with 6-7 neighbouring countries depending on your position to Western Sahara. Algeria covers 2.38 million square kilometres, which makes it 200 times larger than the smallest country on the African continent, the Gambia.
Population density
Due to the nature of Algeria’s geography, it is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. But with a population of over 44 million people, it means that some parts of the country have a high density while others have almost none. 90% of Algeria’s population lives along the north coast. This map shows the difference between the population centres in the north and the sparse largely uninhabited Sahara in the south.
Provinces of Algeria
Algeria is divided into 58 provinces known as wilayas. The north of the country with the population centres has smaller much more densely populated wilayas, whereas the wilayas in the south are larger with smaller populations. The name of the province and the capital of that province usually have the same name.
