Food and Drink Algeria

Food and drink in Algeria in short is amazing. Particularly Algerian food we believe is highly underrated and possible one of if not the best cuisine on the whole continent. With such varied landscapes and cultural influences from Africa, the Middle East a nd Europe, Algeria has developed an amazing food culture.

Here are some of our go to picks for anyone travelling to the country:

Bourak (burek)

This is Algeria’s answer to spring rolls and let me tell you this food is the stuff dreams are made of. The most common one (and the best in our opinion) is made with shrimp and cheese and served with a generous squeeze of lemon juice. Honestly the best.

Chakchouka (Shakshuka)

This is a staple in North Africa and can now be found widely around the world as a breakfast favourite. Chakchouka is a spiced tomato stew served with eggs cooked in the hot liquid. This will often be served with bread on the side to dip in the sauce.

Couscous

No North African country would be complete without couscous. This is the main grain staple found in Algeria and is served as a side dish to most meals. Couscous is cooked in many different methods, using different flavoured stocks and with different ingredients added such as raisins to enhance it.

Rechta

This is a must try if you find yourself in Algiers. It is thin starchy noodles usually served with a cinnamon-spiced chicken sauce. This is often eaten during special occasions such as Eid-al-fitr (end of Ramadan).

Berkoukes

This is a hearty meat stew made using large couscous pearls served with a spicy tomato broth and is perfect for when the colder weather sets in.

Algerian BBQ

Any trip to Algeria will definitely a trip to one of the many BBQ restaurants serving fresh charcoal grilled meat skewers and sausages. This is a great place to try a wide range of meats from Lamb, beef and chicken but in all different forms from liver, to fat wrapped sausages to plain old amazing grilled chicken. BBQ in Algeria is usually served with fries, side salads and various sauces and olive oil.

Djouzia

This is a delicious nougat and honey sweet which is famous from Constantine. Often eaten during weddings, this delicious nut-fill sweet comes in bite size pieces and is super addictive. This is one to definitely upset your dentist so you know it’s good!
