The current flag of Algeria has been in use since 1962. Prior to this a similar flag was used by the resistance in the war of independence against the French.

The green side and the star and crescent moon represent Islam, the white represents peace and the red colour of the crescent moon and star represents the blood of the martyrs.

Throughout the country you may also see the flag of the Amazigh or Berber peoples.

The blue represents the sea, the green the mountains and the yellow the desert. This is similar to the order in which these geographical areas appear in Algeria such as with the Mediterranean in the north and the Sahara in the south.

The symbol in the centre is the Amazigh alphabet symbol for “z”. This symbol forms part of the word for Berber in the Amazigh language. During the political turmoil in 2019 this flag was banned at rallies and is also banned in Libya to this day.
Due to increased recognition of Amazigh rights in both Algeria and Morocco it is becoming more common to see this flag.
