What to Pack for Yemen

Clothing

Yemen is a conservative Islamic country and so this will dictate what you will be wearing. Our group tour of Yemen does include some longer drives, so a combination of conservative and comfortable clothing is recommended.

During your trip to Yemen, you will have to follow a strict dress code. Men will need to be wearing long trousers/pants and women must wear a head scarf at all times, with arms and legs completely covered. The weather in Yemen is fairly warm all year round so you need to bear this in mind too, and most people aim for loose fitting, light-weight clothing.

For women, wearing something like an abaya can be an easy way to dress conservatively without too much hassle, and will be what many of the local women will also be wearing.

Footwear

You should bring with you comfortable walking shoes that you aren’t afraid of getting a little dirty. At times we will be walking over rocks and through sand and dry riverbeds. Sneakers or normal sandals are fine if that’s what you’re comfortable in, however they will get dusty and dirty.

Luggage

Big suitcases are fine to bring, however it is preferable to bring smaller bags for this trip as transportation is generally done in smaller cars/vans with less room for luggage. If you are worried about the size of your suitcase, feel free to ask us before you start your trip.

Medicines

It is recommended that you bring any prescriptions you need from your home country as well as basic medicines such as pain killers and anything to help with gastrointestinal problems. Some basic supplies might be hard to source in Yemen. Pharmacies exist of course, but a lot of things that we’re used to having easy access to in the west won’t be easy to come by.

Cash

You must bring all cash with you to Yemen. No ATMs are available to use with foreign cards. USD cash is the best to bring and you must have new clean notes with no rips or marks.

Power banks

Power outages can be an issue in Yemen so we recommend bringing a power bank if you have one, as a backup in case we do have power cuts.
