Although locals semi-jokingly refer to Kyrgyzstan as the Switzerland of Central Asia, the truth is Switzerland should be known as the Kyrgyzstan of Europe. Switzerland’s highest mountain is only 4634m, while Kyrgyzstan has 158 mountain ranges, 22 mountains over 5000m and its highest mountain stands at 7439m, not that far off the highest mountains in the world.
Kyrgyzstan has proudly been the most tourist friendly of the Stans for many years and is slowly becoming one of the must-see destinations of the world meaning you should get in quickly.
Eco-tourism is the prime motivator for those visiting Kyrgyzstan, however we think this is only one part of Kyrgyzstan’s story. Very few other places in the world can you be sleeping in a 1950s Khrushchev era Soviet apartment one night and then sleeping in a yurt under the stars the next. Likewise, nowhere else can you see a traditionally dressed eagle hunter stepping out of a Soviet made Lada.
Don’t let its small size fool you, Kyrgyzstan can’t be done quickly as there is so much to see. From the beach resorts of Issyk Kol, to the wide boulevards of Bishkek, the high plains of Song-Kol to the wild west middle of nowhere Tash Rabat, Kyrgzystan should be high on everyone’s destination list.
If our group tour dates don't work for you, we also organise customised independent tours to Kyrgyzstan, so why not get in touch!
