What is the Marmarita Festival?

The Marmarita Festival is one of the biggest and most significant events held in Syria. The famous festival is held annually in August and is a vibrant celebration that transforms the quiet village of Marmarita in Syria's Wadi al-Nasara, known in English as the Valley of Christians, into a grand stage of joy and festivity.

This colourful event has become one of the largest and most anticipated celebrations in Syria, enticing visitors from all around Syria as well as hundreds of international guests from around the world. The carnival kicks off on the 14 th of August each year, coinciding with the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. For several days, the streets of Marmarita come alive with parades, music, dance, and a sea of colourful costumes. Participants of all ages don traditional outfits, as well as comical ones (think Donald Duck or Oscar the Grouch), inspired by local heritage, filling the air with laughter, singing, and the rhythmic beats of folk music.

How do they celebrate?

During the festival, visitors can expect to see parades featuring elaborate costumes and floats, live performances by Syrian and regional Arab artists, traditional dance and music showcases and artistic exhibitions celebrating local culture.

The history of the Marmarita Carnival is deeply rooted in the village's past. Its origins can be traced back to the early 20th century when many residents of Marmarita migrated to South America, particularly Brazil and Argentina, in search of better opportunities. There, they experienced the South American traditions of Mardi Gras and other similar festivals and brought the unique concepts back to their small Syrian village upon their return. Over time, the carnival evolved into a unique celebration that blends Syrian Christianity as well as Syrian identity in general, with many Muslims also joining in the fun.

The Marmarita Festival has become a way for the people of Wadi al-Nasara to connect with their heritage and roots while also embracing the festive spirit of carnivals from around the world. It also brings in a lot of dollars to the local economy with hotels and restaurants in the area all completely full during this Syrian version of Carnevale.  The Marmarita Festival is more than just a local event, it has become a significant tourist attraction.

The village's natural beauty, surrounded by green hills and valleys, provides a stunning backdrop for the festivities. Its proximity to important historical sites like the Krak des Chevaliers makes it an ideal destination for those looking to combine cultural celebration with historical exploration.

People from major Syrian cities like Damascus, Latakia, Tartus, and Aleppo flock to Marmarita specifically to participate in the carnival. Since the beginning of the Syrian War, the event has started to symbolize the resilience and strength of the Syrian people, particularly the Christian community in Wadi al-Nasara, but also the Syrian people in general. Likewise, as travellers look for more unique experiences, the Marmarita festival has slowed become one of the most sought after events in Syria.
