Jordan – Syrian border opens new possibilities for travellers

Travellers wishing to travel to Syria aren’t limited to the most common entrance point through Lebanon. Almost all tour groups and solo travellers alike heading to Syria begin their journey in Lebanon’s capital – Beirut. For a long time, this was because Jordan had closed their border to the war-torn country. Jordan, unlike Lebanon was lucky enough to avoid spill over from the Syrian crisis.

However, since the Syrian government managed to regain control of most of their country as well as their important border crossings, Jordan has once again opened their border to Syria allowing foreign tourists as well as other travellers to utilise this much less common border crossing.

The border crossing is called Jaber and is located directly opposite the Syrian town of Naseeb. Jaber as-Sirhan in the name of the town located on the Jordanian side of the border and is roughly 100km north of the Jordanian capital of Amman.

The visa process for entering through Jordan is the same as crossing from Lebanon, it just needs to be stipulated in advance.

This option is great for travellers who have already experienced everything Lebanon has to offer and want to explore Jordan beforehand instead.

Even better is that tourists can explore all three countries as they can enter from one and then exit to the other.

Amman is a great hub for regional flights with lots of options from all over the Middle East. Jordan has been a favourite of even less well travelled individuals for years with the famous Petra and Wadi Rum at the top of many lists of must see destinations.

One aspect to be careful of is if you’ve travelled from Israel, you might not have an Israeli stamp in your passport but you will have a Jordanian stamp showing the border you crossed from Israel.
