Travelling in the 21 st century means usually not needing to worry about exchanging money and travellers cheques. Unless of course, like any member of the Saiga family, you like really getting off the beaten track. It’s these travellers that know that even today there are still parts of the world where cash in king and using plastic can be difficult.
Although Algeria is not yet the most tourist friendly destination, it is possible to use western cards to withdraw money. Some hotels and fancier shops and restaurants will also accept foreign cards, however it is best to always carry local cash (Algerian Dinar) as many local smaller establishments will be cash only.
That all being said, it is still best to bring cash to Algeria, as there is a black market exchange rate that runs parallel to the official exchange rates. While ATMs operate at the official exchange rate, if you exchange your US dollars or Euros you’ll be able to access a much higher rate, at times up to 50% more than the official rate.
Since it is possible to use ATMs in Algeria, having cards on you is a great back up. After all, having cash at a bad exchange rate is better than having no cash at all. Likewise, upmarket hotels and boutique stores will be able to accept cards and charge in USD, but this is only for high end purchases.
Algiers
Automatic Teller Machines in Algeria are integrated into the European system meaning that cards issued in main countries by major banks should work at any ATM you find in the capital city. There are plenty of ATMs all across Algiers and they should be stocked with local Dinar.
Oran
The second largest city in Algeria also has abundant ATMs and most foreign cards should be accepted. Likewise, there are supermarkets and hotels in Oran that also accept foreign credit and debit cards.
Constantine
There are significantly less options here, but there are still some options in the third largest city in Algeria. However there have been many more reports of foreign cards not being accepted here, or ATMs being out of order.
Outside of the three main cities
Do not expect to find working ATMs in the rest of Algeria. While it is possible, it is not reliable and you’ll also end up spending quality sightseeing time looking for cash.
US cards
There were previous reports that cards issued in the US may face issues withdrawing money in Algeria, however, recent reports have shown no issues faced by American travellers.
Black Market Exchange Rate
In Algeria there is a black market exchange rate which is currently around 30% more than the official exchange rate. If you choose to use an ATM you will be getting the official rate, meaning you will have 30% less spending power than if you choose to exchange US dollars or Euros on the black market. If you join a tour, your guide will be able to help you get the best rate.
