All of us that watched the news in 2024, saw the constant stream of conflict and wars popping all over the world, but most notably in the Middle East. We travel all over the Middle East all the time and while yes, some spots are definitely off limits we think there are certain countries that get lumped in that definitely don’t deserve it. For us a stand out of these countries is Iraq.
So, do we think it’s safe? Yes! Absolutely! We think now is better than ever to come and explore Iraq. Here are some of the reasons why we think Iraq is a safe place to travel in 2025.
1. Hospitality
Like in many Arab countries, hospitality is second to none! There’s no way you can compare the generosity you will receive in Iraq to anything that you will experience in Europe. People here are extremely friendly to foreigners, no matter where you’re from! In fact, it is quite common that when you go to pay for a meal or a street shawarma that they will refuse your payment. This could often result in an argument but only because they want you to have a free meal! Could you imagine this in Italy at a tourist site? I think not!
2. Reputation
Iraq unfortunately after going through years of conflict, understandably has a reputation of being a dangerous country. In reality widespread conflict has long since left the country and the people of Iraq want to change that image. When people know you are foreign they will go out of their way to make you feel comfortable in their country. Even taxi drivers can be accommodating which is not something you find in many places.
3. No attacks on tourists
While there may be the odd report of something crazy happening in the country such as a rocket being launched at an embassy with little result, attacks on tourists are basically unheard of. The tourist site areas of the country are protected and the only people you will really have to watch out for a hoards of curious kids wanting to get photos with you. Even things like pickpocketing and minor crimes are rarely targeted towards tourists. You are absolutely more likely to get robbed or worse on holiday in Spain and France than in Iraq.
Are there any actual dangers? In every country there are risks and Iraq is no exception. It is still advised to avoid the border area with Syria, which is very easy done as its far from the main sites you’ll be seeing in the Mesopotamia area.
Iraq has truly risen from the ashes of what was 20 years of hellish conflict and is now emerging as one of the safest places in the Middle East. People here are eager to leave that part of their history behind and open to the world. Iraq has some of if not the most impressive historical sites in the world with numerous UNESCO sites and a history that covers every time period from the beginning of civilisation. So now is the perfect time to head over to this sun-drenched history buffs paradise and immerse yourself in some true Middle Eastern culture and hospitality.
