Over the past few years, though with some minor hiccups, travel to Libya has become much more accessible. Travel prior to the civil war was difficult and discouraged many people from visiting this amazing country. Any number of tourists coming quickly dried up with the outbreak of hostilities in 2011, which has been very slow to come back.
Now the country is pretty much split in two between east and west. While tourists are able to visit Tripoli (though numbers are still very low), almost no one has been heading to Benghazi the regional capital of Eastern Libya. This area is run by a different government to Tripoli which makes logistics of heading to Benghazi just a little more difficult than Tripoli.
Can you go? In short, yes! However, you will have to jump through some hurdles. Travel to this part of Libya will require armed escorts, expensive permits and a different visa to the Libyan visa you will need for visiting Tripoli. We of course can help you organise a trip to Benghazi if you’re super interested in visiting. The area around Benghazi contains some amazing Roman ruins and is probably one of the least visited areas in the world by foreign tourists.
What other areas of Libya can I visit? Well, seemingly every day new parts of the country are becoming available. Another area tourists may want to visit will be the deep south of Libya in the Ubari region. Travel here is also not the easiest, and also requires permits and armed escorts which are quite pricey. If you’re looking for remote desert landscapes and some true Sahara adventure, then a tour down to southern Libya will definitely scratch that itch.
For now, we are running group tours in the Tripolitania region of northwestern Libya which covers Roman ruins, Tripoli and an adventure into the Sahara to Ghadames via some stunning views in Jabel Nafusa. If you’re looking to visit one of Africa’s most elusive countries or just want to tick that box, then join us on one of our Libya group tours or ask us about private tours.
